December 2009/January 2010 Newsletter
Dear Reader,
As you might have noticed we will be sending one newsletter for December / January, as the lucky ones will be on leave and would not have access to their mails. December and January means new life or new beginnings to us, this is also the time when some of our crocodile eggs will start to hatch and we will have new life at the farm.
Crocodile Facts
In South Africa nesting of the Nile crocodile starts after the first spring rains and can continue to March. Preferred nesting locations are sandy shores, dry stream beds, or riverbanks. The female digs a hole a couple of meters from the river bank and up to 500 mm deep, and lays between 25 and 100 eggs.
Once the eggs are laid, the expectant mother covers the eggs with sand, and then guards them for the 3 month incubation period. The hatchlings make a high-pitched chirping noise before hatching, which is the signal for the mother to dig open the nest. The mother may pick up the eggs in her mouth, and roll them around to help crack the shell, and release her offspring. Once they are hatched, the female may lead the hatchlings to water, or even carry them in her mouth.
Nile crocodiles have temperature dependent gender determination, which means the gender of their hatchlings is determined not by genetics, but by the average temperature during their incubation period. If the temperature inside the nest is 28°C the offspring will be female. Males are born if the temperature is higher than 31°C. A split between male and female crocodiles happens when the temperature is a constant 30°C.
Hatchlings are about 300 mm long at birth.
